Egyptian pyramids were modeled on a sacred, pointed stone called the benben. The benben symbolized the rays of the sun; ancient texts claimed that pharaohs reached the heavens via sunbeams.

Here are some facts about The Great Pyramid

Two types of limestone were used for construction. A soft limestone either pure or nummulitic was used for the bulk of the core blocks and a hard white limestone for the mantle. Hard limestone becomes more polished with age.

The average casing stone on the lowest level was 5 ft. long by 5 ft. high by 6 ft. deep and weighed 15 tons.

The cornerstone foundations of the pyramid have ball and socket construction capable of dealing with heat expansion and earthquakes.

Pretty cool facts, Am I Right? Razz

If you could weigh an average pyramid it would be around 5,400,000 tons. The average stone block weighs as much as 2 modern cars (2.5 tons). The largest single stone block (in the pyramid of mycerinus ) must weigh about 285 tons- that’s 200 to 250 cars.
I also drew a map of the best pyramids in egypt! Remember, don't be a mummy!

The Great pyramid is estimated to have about 2,300,000 stone blocks weighing from 2-30 Tons each with some weighing as much as 70 tons! Wow thats heavy..
there is so much stone mass in the pyramid that the interior temperature is constant and equals the average temperature of the earth, 20 Degrees Celsius (68 Degrees Fahrenheit). Hot..

The base of the pyramid covers 55,000m2 (592,000 ft2) with each side greater than 20,000m2 (218,000 ft2) in a area..

    Pyramids!!! Camels-and-pyramids

    http://www.bible-history.com/archaeology/egypt/1-pyramids-bb.jpg
Pyramids Monuments on a square base with sloping sides rising to a point. They are associated particularly with ancient Egypt, where some of the largest survive almost intact. They served as burial chambers for pharaohs. The earliest Egyptian pyramid was a step pyramid (ziggurat), built c.2700 bc for Zoser. Pyramid building in Egypt reached its peak during the 4th dynasty, the time of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The largest pyramid in the world, it was built for Khufu c.2500 bc, and stands 146m (480ft) high with sides 231m (758ft) long at the base. The largest New World ziggurat pyramid was built at Teotihuacán, Mexico, in the 1st century ad; it was 66m (216ft) high with a surface area of 50,600sq m (547,200sq ft).
For thousands of years, the largest structures on Earth were pyramids: first the Red Pyramid in the Dashur Necropolis and then the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still remaining. The largest pyramid ever built, by volume, is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, in the Mexican state of Puebla. This pyramid is still being excavated. The most famous pyramids are the Egyptian pyramids — huge structures built of brick or stone, some of which are among the largest constructions. There are 138 pyramids discovered in Egypt as of 2008.[3][4] The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest in Egypt and one of the largest in the world. Until Lincoln Cathedral was built in 1400 AD, it was the tallest building in the world. The pyramid's features are so large they can be seen from the moon. The base is over 52,600 square meters in area. Egypt has the most pyramids in the world, with Sudan coming in at a close second.
It was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and the only one of the seven to survive into modern times. The Ancient Egyptians covered their faces with polished white limestone, though most of the stones used for the purpose have fallen or have been removed and used to build the mosques of Cairo.

Some of this may be repeated because it took me a long time to get the pics and type the info.

Many giant granite temple pyramids were made in South India during the Chola Empire, many of which are still in religious use today. Examples of such pyramid temples include Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, the Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. However the largest temple pyramid in the area is Sri Rangam in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. The Brihadisvara Temple was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1987; the Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram were added as extensions to the site in 2004.[6]Pyramids!!! Pyramids!!! Empty who built the pyramids?

Post by maneeya Thu May 28, 2009 6:50 pm

Contrary to some popular depictions, the pyramid builders were not slaves or foreigners. Excavated skeletons show that they were Egyptians who lived in villages developed and overseen by the pharaoh's supervisors.

The builders' villages boasted bakers, butchers, brewers, granaries, houses, cemeteries, and probably even some sorts of health-care facilities—there is evidence of laborers surviving crushed or amputated limbs. Bakeries excavated near the Great Pyramids could have produced thousands of loaves of bread every week.

Some of the builders were permanent employees of the pharaoh. Others were conscripted for a limited time from local villages. Some may have been women: Although no depictions of women builders have been found, some female skeletons show wear that suggests they labored with heavy stone for long periods of time.

Graffiti indicates that at least some of these workers took pride in their work, calling their teams "Friends of Khufu," "Drunkards of Menkaure," and so on—names indicating allegiances to pharaohs.

Here is my information about pyramid
Pharaohs were buried there and they wanted the after life so they will keep on living. Also many people will try to rob the pyramid cause they put lots of gold and many other good things for the Pharaohs. So that is why they made a sphinx to protect the pyramid its head is the head of the pharaohs. Pyramid is made with block of rock and they don't need any cement to stay together cause it fits perfectly. Also pharaohs are put in sarcophagus( a coffin to hold pharaohs). Slave or foreigners didn't built the pyramid the villagers built them. The pyramid may take like 30 or more years to built, but the Pyramids at Giza they take like 80 year or more to make them it take about 20,000 to 30,000 workers i think.
That had traps in the pyramids cause they know that robbers will try to get in, but some robbers got in and took every single thing, but the peoples say there were curse in the pharaohs pyramid. The pyramid at Giza are the biggest ones. Builders tried to fool thieves by placing a blocking stone at the end of a passageway and plastering it in. If thieves broke through the plaster then they would come to the stone and give up. The real way into the tomb would then be through a hidden trapdoor in the ceiling. They have hieroglyphs in the pyramid walls about the pharaohs and ruling egypt and stuff. The Great Pyramid of Giza is also called Khufu's Pyramid or the Pyramid of Khufu and Pyramid of Cheops.
The temperature inside The Great Pyramid remains constant at 68 degrees F, the same as earth’s internal temperature. Also there are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid - King's chamber, Queen's chamber and unfinished chamber.

The Egyptian pyramids are ancient pyramid-shaped masonry structures located in Egypt.

There are over 100 pyramids in Egypt. Most were built as tombs for the country's Pharaohs and their consorts during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods.

The earliest known Egyptian pyramid is the Pyramid of Djoser which was built during the third dynasty. This pyramid and its surrounding complex were designed by the architect Imhotep, and are generally considered to be the world's oldest monumental structures constructed of dressed masonry.

The best known Egyptian pyramids are those found at Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo. Several of the Giza pyramids are counted among the largest structures ever built.

The Pyramid of Khufu at Giza is the largest Egyptian pyramid. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence.
By the time of the early dynastic period of Egyptian history, those with sufficient means were buried in bench-like structures known as mastabas.
The first historically documented Egyptian pyramid is attributed to the architect Imhotep, who planned what Egyptologists believe to be a tomb for the pharaoh Djoser. Amenhotep is credited with being the first to conceive the notion of stacking mastabas on top of each other — creating an edifice composed of a number of "steps" that decreased in size towards its apex. The result was the Step Pyramid of Djoser — which was designed to serve as a gigantic stairway by which the soul of the deceased pharaoh could ascend to the heavens. Such was the importance of Imhotep's achievement that he was deified by later Egyptians.

The most prolific pyramid-building phase coincided with the greatest degree of absolutist pharaonic rule. It was during this time that the most famous pyramids, those near Giza, were built. Over time, as authority became less centralized, the ability and willingness to harness the resources required for construction on a massive scale decreased, and later pyramids were smaller, less well-built and often hastily constructed.

Long after the end of Egypt's own pyramid-building period, a burst of pyramid-building occurred in what is present-day Sudan, after much of Egypt came under the rule of the Kings of Napata. While Napatan rule was brief and ceased in 661 BC, the Egyptian influence made an indelible impression, and during the later Sudanese Kingdom of Meroe (approximately in the period between 300 BC–300 AD) this flowered into a full-blown pyramid-building revival, which saw more than two hundred indigenous, but Egyptian-inspired royal pyramid-tombs constructed in the vicinity of the kingdom's capital city.

The Egyptian rulers ordered the pyramids to be built because they feared their remains would be disturbed by grave robbers. They chose a site on the west side of the Nile River because they believed that the home of the dead was toward the setting sun. The burial chambers were placed under the exact centers of the pyramids. Passageways, which were built angling down from the sides and leading to the chambers, were later sealed with heavy stones. The pyramids did not achieve their purpose of protecting the ancient tombs, however. Over the centuries looters broke into most of them and stole the jewels and other treasures that had been buried in them.
pyramid The true pyramid exists only in Egypt, though the term has also been applied to similar structures in other countries. Egyptian pyramids are square in plan and their triangular sides, which directly face the points of the compass, slope upwards at approximately a 50° angle from the ground and meet at an apex.

    Hello Chobots,

Today I found some facts about pyramids, below are the facts:

If you broke the Great pyramid into slabs 30 cm thick you could build up a wall 1 metre high that would stretch all the way around France! If you had a little more time you could cut it into rods about 6cm 2 - join them together and it would be enough to reach a quarter of the way to the moon!

If you could weigh an average pyramid it would be around 5,400,000 tons. The average stone block weighs as much as 2 modern cars (2.5 tones). The largest single stone block (in the pyramid of mycerinus) must weigh about 285 tones - that’s 200 to 250 cars.

The Egyptians didn’t have accurate measuring tape. They used fibre-cords that could shrink or stretch. Still, the greatest mistake in the Great pyramid in just 20cm on the side of 230 metres. They were even accurate in building a flat base. The Southeast corner is just one centimetre higher than the North-west corner.

It is forbidden to climb the pyramids today. There have been to many accidents, so now you have to have special permission.

The pyramids are not the most awesomely large human construction. The Great wall of China is much more awesome and the Mexican pyramid of Quetzacoatl is an even more awesome 54 metres tall and has a volume of 3.3 million cubic metres. The Great pyramid of Cheops is just 2.5 million cubic metres. But the pyramids of Egypt are the oldest stone buildings in the world.

Below Is A Picture Of The Great Pyramid:

The pyramid is the logical form of architecture if you want to build something to last, and so you can find examples of pyramids in Egyptian, Mayan, and Incan civilizations and possibly China.
